What does the end of the copper network mean?

Telephony in the UK will change forever when Openreach switches of its Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) and The Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) in 2025.

These legacy systems are out of date, they cannot keep up with demand and are expensive for Openreach to maintain and repair. The UK has been moving towards faster, Internet-based communications for some time, so it makes sense for the old systems to be retired off.

And although 2025 is the official retirement date, services that rely on copper networks are already being phased out much sooner than this.

What services will it affect and when?

If your business uses the PSTN or the ISDN to make calls then you will be affected. But this is not just about phone calls. You may not realise it but services like alarms, door entry systems, payment terminal and even lifts are likely to be connected to your phone lines.

Openreach started phasing out older systems in 2020 and whilst phones won’t suddenly stop working overnight, they won’t be taking new orders from September 2023. This means if you need to add a new line, or your current contract is coming to an end, you will have to look for another solution.

There are plenty of Internet-based solutions for these services. But if you are one of the many UK businesses still on the old technology, the clock is starting to tick.

What does this mean for me?

The switch-off will impact around 2 million small to medium-sized businesses in the UK. With any of these blissfully unaware, there is likely to be a last-minute rush in a year or so.

Replacing your phone system might seem like an upheaval, but exploring the options in good time will mean you get the solution that best suits your business. And remember, if something goes wrong with your existing system, the chances are the parts will soon be unavailable .

It makes sense to start planning for the change ahead of the rush, and why keep paying for services that are about to become osbsolete?

What is the alternative?

The change opens up the opportunity for you to move to a cloud or Internet-based alternative.

A  cloud-based or VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) system sends calls over the Internet so you don’t need a landline.

Using cloud technology can reduce your bills as there are no line rentals. VoIP allows you to use your personal devices to make calls through a single number. VoIP is easily scalable and can adjust as your business grows.

With greater flexibility, modern features, and better value for money. it’s time to switch on to a modern phone system!
